EASTBAY.com - One Stop Athletic Shopping by Sunny Marshall

If your family is anything like mine, it’s not uncommon to have one kid in soccer, another kid in basketball, and baseball season looming just around the corner. I have spent countless hours driving around town to find soccer cleats, baseball gloves and athletic clothing for my kids, and that’s not even mentioning all the shopping I’ve done for my husband’s sporting activities or my own running. You can imagine how excited I was when I discovered Eastbay.com.  All the stuff I needed for my family in one place online, available when it is convenient for ME to shop, not based on brick and mortar store hours.

Eastbay.com has every name brand athletic gear you can imagine, like Nike, Adidas, Asics and Reebok.  Not only do they have shoes, which seem to be the item I purchase the most, but they also have athletic gear, everything from baseball gloves and bats to basketballs and helmets.

There is a WIDE variety of clothing for men, women and children and tons of name brands, too. Boardshorts, Polo shirts, running clothes, Nike Pro, track jackets, hoody’s and lots more.  They even offer college tees with the school name or mascot emblem at an incredibly low price: two shirts for $19.99. I know when I’ve gone to the local college store to buy tees I’ve spent over $20 just for one!

The site is super easy to use. You can search by sport or by category and find whatever you need very quickly.  I even bought my daughter’s birthday present from Eastbay: a Reebok Cheerleader Gift set that included a cheerleader outfit, pom-poms, a megaphone and stickers all for under $20.

So trust me, save yourself the gas money and the time and visit Eastbay.com to shop for your family’s athletic gear.  Who doesn’t want to make their life a little easier?

What are comfortable walking shoes for guys?

I do a lot of walking… A LOT. I’m going to England in a few months and I know my walking time will just increase. I need a pair of shoes that I can walk on all day and my feet will still feel great. Thanks!

I travel internationally a LOT and having decent and aggressive arch support and good rubber/nylon treads is critical for travel. Sport shoes may "feel" nice and cushy, but for walking many hours/day, you need the support. Selection of a brand depends on the shape of your feet, and you will need to try them on and see which works best:

Mephisto (French Brand)
http://www.mephistoshoes.com/
For me, I like Mephisto the best, but the prices…!!!

If you have problematic feet size (I do…7.5 EEE, short and wide), Allan Edmonds come in an amazing set of sizes and widths, get their casual line with rubber or nylon treads. They also go on sale a lot. These are (normally) pricey, but if you have problem feet size like I do, I don’t always have a choice. Otherwise, the other brands I listed are probably better if they fit you.

Birkenstock (German Brand)

Functional, but not the best-looking shoes…

Ecco (Danish Brand)
http://www.eccousa.com/about-ecco/index.aspx
They sell Ecco at a lot of stores.

Some models are Gortex-insulated to protect you from the rain and still allow the feet to transpire without locking in water vapor, but you will pay a premium for this.

Again, I can not stress enough that a brand that fits another person may not work for you, so you need to try different brands on and see what works best. Good walking shoes that last are not going to be cheap, perhaps $200 or so. Ecco’s are less, but then are not as supportive as the other brands. Some people swear by Clarks and they are well under $100, but last time I bought a pair they fit me well but my feet still hurt after walking all day. Ditto New Balance although if you need a Nike-looking pair I think they are the best.

Lucky you, have a great time!

How much friction is best for walking with proper walking shoes?

Should the high or low coefficient of friction be considered best for walking shoes and why? Does it make difference anyway?Thank you very much for your consideration…
Will a very high coefficient of friction of shoes make it harder to walk?

Basically the higher, the better. Think of it in terms of absolutes. If the coefficient of friction was zero, you would not be able to use friction to walk forward at all on a flat surface; you could only move in any direction by pushing off of other surfaces. Shoes with a very low coefficient of friction would be like walking on cooking oil or melting ice.

A high coefficient of friction, on the other hand, would only help you in your quest to move forward.

Can I wear walking shoes to jog?

I just bought a new pair of Saucony shoes for jogging, only to find out that they are walking shoes. I haven’t worn them yet, should I take them back?

No, no, that’s a bad idea. Walking shoes, especially brands like Saucony are excellent. For walking. But substituting them for jogging will get you injured. They are engineered for a different activity.

Running shoes are engineered for the stress that is particular to running. In addition, there are different classifications based on the individual biomechanics. If over-pronators wear shoes made for over-supinators, they’re asking for trouble and vice versa. A specialty running shoe store will fit you properly.
